Often used as warm-up hiking in preparation for the Kilimanjaro, Climbing Mount Meru is just a challenging and you need to have some climbing experience before trekking this second-highest Mountain in Tanzania. Known for its huge cliffs and green surroundings, the slopes of this epic mountain forms the Center of Arusha National park and will give you a really unique experience. On your trekking, you have greater chances of seeing various animals and a lot of birdlife.
With this itinerary, after the summit, you will descend directly to the exit gate- the Momella gate. Therefore this itinerary requires some kind of physical fitness to endure the long walk from the summit to Momella gate.
Day 1 – Momella Gate (1,500 meters) to Miriakamba Hut (2,500 meters):
Africa Nature Photography will pick you up from your hotel in Arusha or Moshi and transfer you to Arusha national park. At Momella gate, our guides will process registration for the climb. After all registration formalities have been completed you will start your hike up through a montane forest. We will be accompanied by a ranger from Arusha national park. You will walk through a forest, then an open land where you can spot wild animals such as zebra, giraffes, and buffalos. It may seem like a walking safari.
On a clear day, you will have a great view of Mount Kilimanjaro when you are at Miriakamba Hut.
You will have your dinner at Miriakamba’s big dining room and go to rest in your cubic ready for tomorrow’s hike to the base camp.

Altitude gain: 1000 meters
Day 2 –Miriakamba Hut (2,500 meters) to Saddle Hut (3,500 meters):
After breakfast, you will start a steep ascent towards the base camp. Today you will be able to see clearly the two Mount Meru peaks – the little Meru (3,820 meters) and Socialist Peak (4,566 meters).
After arriving at Saddle Hut, your guide will arrange for an acclimatization walk from Saddle Hut to Little Meru peak and back to Saddle Hut. Today’s views are epic. You may see Arusha and Monduli towns from Little Meru. Momella Lake and Meru’s ash cone can also be seen from this point. Get your camera ready for great sunset and sunrise shots.

Zone: Montane Forest Heath and Moorland
Altitude gain: 1,000 meters
Day 3 –Saddle Hut (3,500 meters) to Socialist Peak (4566 meters), then descend to Momella Gate(1500 meters):
We will leave the base camp at midnight (around 1 AM -2 AM). Our first breakpoint will be at Rhino Point (3800 meters). Here you can rest for a few minutes, reenergize yourself ready for the final, more challenging part of the summit attempt. We will follow the narrow crater ridge until we reach the summit. At the summit of Mount Meru, you may have incredible views of the sunrise over Mount Kilimanjaro. You will also explore the epic views of Meru’s crater and ash cone.
After enjoying all the great views at the summit, we will start 3,066 meters descend to Momella gate. On our way to the gate, we will pass the remarkable Fig Tree Arch and a waterfall. Today you will also be able to see wild animals. Upon arrival at the Momella gate and having finalized all signing out, you will be transferred to your hotel back in Moshi or Arusha.

Altitude gain: 1,066 meters, then altitude loss: 3,066 meters
