Safari Itinerary

DAY 1: Meet and Greet

Your safari begins at Kilimanjaro International Airport with a transfer to Hatari Lodge. Enjoy delicious cuisine and settle in for a good night’s rest in this lodge decorated to recall the days of the classic film Hatari! starring John Wayne.

DAY 2: Arusha National Park

Breakfast on the terrace overlooking Mt Kilimanjaro and passing wildlife! Then go out on a game drive through Arusha National Park. Look for gentle giraffes, boisterous baboons, big buffalo, and your best view of colorful flamingos on this safari. Almost 400 species of birds have been recorded in the Park. In the montane forest, look overhead for black and white colobus monkeys. Back at nearby Hatari Lodge, walk out for a sundowner on the deck and enjoy a classic sunset overlooking the snows of Kilimanjaro. After dinner, settle in to the cozy lounge or sit by the fire.

  • If you are interested we can organize a morning nature walk with an Armed Ranger on the beautiful slopes of Mt Meru to kitoto view point (4 hours walk), which will be followed by the afternoon game drive to Arusha National Park.

DAY 3: Drive to Tarangire National Park

After breakfast on the terrace, game drive on your way out of Arusha National Park and pass through the outskirts of the city of Arusha on your way to prehistoric-looking Tarangire National Park. It’s a two and half-hours drive from the Lodge to the gate of Tarangire National Park. Upon arriving at the park gate, your guide will do paper works to obtains permits and thereafter, you will drive to the lodge and arrive in time for your lunch. Later in the afternoon, you will have a sundown game viewing into this landscape dotted with baobab trees and umbrella-thorn acacias, visiting the Tarangire River is the centerpiece of this park and is famous for some of the largest herds of elephants in Africa. In the dry season large numbers of animals congregate along the lifeblood of the river. Here you may see lion, leopard, cheetah, lesser kudu, buffalo, Oryx, eland, giraffe and zebra. In addition to the animal species, the park is famous for its century-old baobab trees and over 300 species of birds.

DAY 4: Game Drives in Tarangire National Park

As the sun rises above the ancient trees, you will venture out for a full day game drive to the oasis wonder of Tarangire. You have the option to break the day into two by having a morning and Afternoon game viewing, visiting the Silalei Swamp and Tarangire River is the centerpiece of this park which is famous for some of the largest herds of elephants in Africa. In the dry season large numbers of animals congregate along the lifeblood of the river. Here you may see lion, leopard, cheetah, Greater and lesser kudu, buffalo, Oryx, eland, giraffe and zebra. In addition to the animal species, the park is famous for its century-old baobab trees and over 300 species of birds.

DAY 5: Drive to Ngorongoro highland

This morning, you will visit a local Maasai village for an in-depth cultural experience. The Maasai tribe is one of the few tribes which still embrace, and are proud of, their traditions. Then a short drive to Mto wa Mbu village for an in-depth look at tribal life in Africa where more than 100 different Tanzanian tribes make their homes.

Your tour will include a visit to a local market, local school as well as the banana and rice plantations. You will have lunch with a local family and sample delicious African food. The afternoon drive explore tribal life in the African bush, where more than 100 different Tanzanian tribes make their homes in the Ngorongoro highland.

DAY 6: Descent into the Crater

Set your alarm early as sunrise over Ngorongoro crater as seen from your private balcony is a memory of a lifetime. Afterwards, you will have breakfast by giant windows looking down into the crater. This volcanic crater is the largest unflooded, unbroken caldera in the world measuring about 20 kilometers (12 miles) across. The morning takes us 600 meters (1,969 feet)

down the descent road to the floor of the crater to look for herds of antelope, wildebeest, and zebra as well as cheetah and lion. We’ll have a lunch to remember as we enjoy a hot lunch cooked in one of the forest clearings among the acacia groves. After we ascend the crater wall, sunset brings a delight of colors as you listen for the whoop of hyenas ascending from the depths below. Come down to the bar before dinner as each night brings its own fascinating entertainment from Maasai dancers to truly remarkable acrobats.

DAY 7: Drive From Ngorongoro highland to the Eastern plain of Serengeti

After one last morning on the rim, we visit a Maasai village. We will meet the village elder who will introduce you to the traditional Maasai culture that has been maintained successfully for centuries and still continues to thrive in our ever changing world. As we tour the boma, you will have the opportunity to purchase some of their intricate bead work and other artisan crafts. As we leave the highlands, we make our way to Oldupai Gorge, famous for some of the world’s most important archaeological finds. The new museum reveals the results of Mary and Louis Leakey tireless work when they found the 3.7 million year old footsteps of Australopithecus afarensis and the skull of 1.8 million year old Zinjanthropus boisei. We will arrange for a private tour of the older excavation sites escorted by one of the museum docents. From the sands of the gorge, we head into the eastern plains of Serengeti via the Gol Kopjes. This area linking the Southern plain of Serengeti and Central Serengeti is a fragile habitat consisting of ethereal kopjes and short grass plains. Driving through the Gol kopjes is always a breathtaking experience with a vision of vast open plains and amazing wildlife. This is gazelle country and where there are gazelles there are always cheetahs. Every year, over a million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles follow the rains on a circular trek for grazing lands. As we cross into the park, the endless plains stretch as far as your eye can see on our way to the Central Serengeti and our mobile tented camp. Here in the heart of the Serengeti, you’ll enjoy a real safari camp experience complete with en suite facilities.

 DAY 8 & 9: Discover the Eastern Plain of Serengeti

Enjoy early breakfast at the camp, and then depart for game drive in Serengeti National park. You will enjoying game viewing and photographic opportunity around the eastern plain of Serengeti in search of the Big Cats: African lion, African leopard and Cheetahs! visiting the Gol, barafu, Zebra, Maasai and sametu kopjes in search for the big cats. The Central Serengeti and seronera river valley is home to a great diversity of wildlife due to its unique ecological niches as a transition zone where two distinctly different habitats, the plain and the woodlands merge and various species of wildlife from both habitats can coexist.

 DAY 10 & 11 Discover the eastern plain of Serengeti – Drive to central west Serengeti

This morning we wake up under canvas for the last time on this safari. After breakfasting, explore the Eastern plain of Serengeti as well as Sametu kopjes, Boma Kopjes and Maasai Kopjes. Thereafter enjoy a scenic drive to the western corridor of the Serengeti and the famous Grumeti River.

There is a very good chance you will see herds of animals crossing the Grumeti River. The herds must outsmart the crocodiles and fast-flowing water before facing predators waiting on the other side and it is simply an amazing spectacle.

 DAY 12: Bush Flight from Seronera Airstrip to Arusha

After one more thrilling breakfast at the Serengeti, you will game drive to the Airstrip for a scheduled back to Arusha airport via light aircraft. On arrival, we’ll have a short drive to the Cultural Heritage Center in time for lunch. Experience some amazing shopping choices from intricate carvings to beaded jewelry and don’t miss the chance to bring home some tanzanite as well as see an extraordinary museum of African art. Afterwards you will have a chance to relax in a private day room and get ready for your international flight back home with treasured memories of Africa, her people, and the many wild creatures inhabiting this special land.
