When planning for an African Photo Safari, the key to obtaining great wildlife images is about being in the right place at the right time. We cater to each safari group’s needs by first identifying your photographic desires to understand the best time of year to get the most out of your African photographic safari.
For all our photographic safaris tours, location is our top priority. We choose camps and lodges that are perfectly located for optimal wildlife viewing, for photography and specifically with available power for charging camera batteries and other devices. Additionally, the camps/lodges that we are using understand the schedule of photographers. We know it’s essential to leave early and return after sunset in order to take advantage of the best light. The staff works with us to make sure we have our meals based on our schedules and accommodate us in every other way so our safari runs smoothly and efficiently.
Wildlife Photography requires patience, preparation, dedication, and a guide that understands how to get you into the right place at the right time for that perfect capture. We believe that the guide makes a memorable Tanzania photo safari experience. Our naturalist guides have an innate knowledge and understanding of what every photographer needs to make the best possible images. They are all trained to work very closely with photographers and understand the dynamics of lighting and vehicle positioning as these concepts pertain to wildlife photography. In short, you need to go on a Wildlife photo safari with dedicated experts.
Wildlife photography and traditional Safaris don’t often mix. A photo safari is all about getting back home with magnificent images. It’s with this in mind we limit the number of photographers per vehicle. We have a fleet of 4×4 custom safari vehicles purposely built for comfortable game viewing, photography and videography.
The vehicle has three rows of seating and is equipped with canvas roll-back tops for unrestricted 360 degrees game viewing and photography. It’s imperative no photographer misses the shot so we assign each photographer to his/her entire row. It doesn’t matter on which side of the safari vehicle the action occurs, each photographer will get the best possible vantage point to make the image. If the animal moves from one side of the vehicle to the other, simply move to the other side. No one will be in your way. All your camera gear will be positioned on the seat right next to you to grab whatever accessory you need.
We know that sometimes you will use more battery power than you expect while out on safari. This may create the need to charge a battery during our game drive. Don’t worry – we have you covered. Our vehicles are equipped with charging stations that allow you to top up batteries while in the field. They also have the capability to charge your cellphones as we have installed USB connections.
We know how important stabilization is for photography so we provide bean bags in our vehicles. There is no need to bring your own. The beanbags are mounted to the top of the vehicle so when you stand, you have a stable platform. An additional bag is provided for you to lie across the window to provide a lower shooting angle. Extras will also be available for everyone in the group in case you need to raise your camera to a higher position.
We know that the key to making a great photo is dependent upon the LIGHT. The guides at Africa Nature Photography realize this and accommodate your needs by starting early in the morning, usually before sunrise, so you can capture the warmth of the morning sun. In that wildlife are most active at this time of day, it’s a double win. The group then spends the rest of the morning taking pictures. We return to camp during mid-day for lunch, rest, charge batteries, clean equipment, and download pictures. We then head back out around mid-afternoon and stay out as late as possible, usually a little after sunset. Once again, this is when the best light occurs and when the animals begin to become more active after being lazy during the hours of the hot sun.
Throughout your entire journey, you will be in the company of a professional Photo Safari Naturalist guide on a private safari vehicle. For the duration of your safari, you have the flexibility to choose and adjust the time you leave and return from your game drives. A lot of time photography is all about waiting for just the right moment. That is why, when we get to a sighting, we wait as long as you like to make sure you get the perfect shot and an amazing photo safari experience.
Packing for a photographic safari requires extra caution to ensure that you have all the necessary equipment needed in the field. Apart from the standard safari packing list, here is what you will need to pack for a photographic safari:
We will let you decide what a good camera is for you depending on your style and preferences. However, the consensus is to use a camera that will take you close to the action without weighing you down. Most photographers will say that the most important thing is to invest in interchangeable lenses. You will need a long lens to capture distance objects and a wide-angle lens to capture the landscape. Some swear on having two cameras, one with a long lens and one with a wide lens. This will avoid missing out on great shots while you’re switching lenses right when the action is taking place.
Note that some countries have established guidelines to follow for using drones. Check the guidelines before deciding to pack one. If interested in aerial shots, balloon safaris offer the opportunity for amazing aerial shots.
There are always some on our safari vehicles, but if you decide to bring yours, then bring them empty, beans will be provided free of charge before you head out on safari.)
Plan to carry your camera adapter and an extension cable. Check what voltage is in use at your destination of choice as well as the types of plug sockets being used. Tanzania uses UK three flat prong plug outlets. 220V multi-plug power strip – so that you can charge all of your batteries and electronic devices at the same time. Make sure that it is a 220V power strip as the standard 110V U.S. power strip will fry with the 220V output.
The African wilderness can get quite dusty when traveling during the dry season. You will need to pack cleaning supplies for your equipment, especially the lens. Sensor swabs and special fluid for cleaning your lenses are a must to keep your lenses clean. Don’t forget to pack brushes and soft cloths for cleaning other items.
You will need to pack extra batteries, memory cards, and a device to back-up your memory cards. Also, remember to pack an Auxiliary flash and Better Beamer flash or MagMod. If you don’t want to carry a laptop, some lodges will have a computer that you can use to transfer footage from your memory card to a portable storage device.
