The Experience
Whether you are a complete novice or a seasoned equestrian, the estate provides a tailored adventure through diverse landscapes including open grasslands and acacia woodlands.
- Wildlife Sightings: As you move quietly on horseback, you can get remarkably close to zebras, wildebeests, elands, and various gazelles. The Rare Gerenuk, the estate is one of the few places to spot the “Giraffe-necked” Gerenuk, an elegant and rare antelope often seen standing on its hind legs to reach high branches.
- Birdwatcher’s Paradise: With over 200 recorded species, the elevated position of a horse provides an excellent vantage point for spotting raptors and ground-dwelling birds.
Duration
The full excursion typically spans 3.5 to 4 hours to ensure a relaxed, door-to-door experience from Arusha. While you spend a solid 2 hours in the saddle exploring the Dolly Estate’s diverse wildlife and acacia woodlands, the additional time accounts for the 45-minute scenic transfer each way through the Usa River area. This buffer also includes a personalized safety briefing, equipment fitting, and a “matching” session where guides pair you with a horse suited to your experience level. Whether you choose a morning ride for the best views of Mount Kilimanjaro or an afternoon session that often concludes with a traditional safari “sundowner” drink at the Polo Club, the extended timeframe ensures you aren’t rushed through the preparation or the tranquil return journey.
To stay comfortable and blend into the natural environment, we recommend:
- Clothing: Long pants and closed-toe shoes (ideally with a small heel).
- Colors: Natural tones such as khaki, green, or brown.
