Umbwe Route Itinerary

8 Days | 7 Nights

Umbwe Route: Shortest, steepest, and most challenging path on Kilimanjaro, with poor acclimatization and low success rates. For experienced trekkers only.

Start your journey

Day 1: Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)

An Africa Nature Photography representative will greet you at JRO and transfer you to your hotel. Rest in comfort, enjoy hot showers, Internet, and a swimming pool. In the evening, meet with our managers for a pre-climb briefing.

Private packages include shared airport transfers. Coordinate times to avoid extra fees.

PLEASE NOTE: Check-in starts at 2:00 PM.

DAY 2 Trekking from Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

After breakfast, transfer to Marangu Gate for permits and registration. Trek through lush rainforest, home to colorful birds and monkeys, to Mandara Hut. Optional afternoon walk to Maundi Crater for panoramic views.

Trekking time: 4–5 hours
Distance: 8 km (5 miles)

DAY 3 Trekking from Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp

The trail continues steeply, taking you through montane forest before emerging into the heather and moorland zone. You will traverse ridges with stunning views of Kilimanjaro’s southern glaciers. Arriving at Barranco Camp, you will rest and enjoy views of the Barranco Wall, which you will climb the next day.

Trekking time: 4–5 hours
Distance: 6 km (3.7 miles)

DAY 4 Trekking from Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

After breakfast, you’ll climb the Barranco Wall — an exhilarating but non-technical scramble that takes about an hour. Then the path dips and rises through valleys before arriving at Karanga Camp for lunch. The afternoon is for rest or short acclimatization walks.

Trekking time: 4–5 hours
Distance: 5 km (3.1 miles)

DAY 5 Trekking from Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Today’s trek is a steady climb to Barafu Camp, the base for your summit attempt. Arrive in the afternoon, have an early dinner, and rest before the midnight summit departure.

Trekking time: 3–4 hours
Distance: 4 km (2.5 miles)

DAY 6 Summit to Uhuru Peak, then descent to Millennium Camp

At midnight, start your final ascent under the stars. The route takes you via Stella Point before reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,336 ft). After celebrating and taking photos, descend to Barafu for rest, then continue down to Millennium Camp.

PLEASE NOTE: Maintain focus during descent to avoid injury.

Trekking time: 10–14 hours
Distance: 15 km (9.3 miles)

DAY 7 Descent from Millennium Camp to Mweka Gate

Descend through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. After receiving your summit certificate, transfer back to your hotel.

Trekking time: 4–5 hours
Distance: 12 km (7.4 miles)

DAY 8 Departure

Enjoy your final breakfast at the hotel and transfer to the airport.

PLEASE NOTE: Check-out is at 11:00 AM; late check-out is available for a fee.
